Thomas & Ursula Muddle’s Family

Chart of Thomas & Ursula Muddle’s Family

Thomas Muddle married Ursula Earll at St Margaret’s Church in Buxted on 18 May 1579. No baptisms have been found for their four eldest children so they probably initially lived in a parish such as Hartfield or Withyham where the parish registers for the early 1580s no longer exist. But by the mid-1580s they were living at Maresfield where their three youngest children were baptised between 1586 and 1592 and Ursula was godmother to Ursula Rootes who was baptised in 1585. Their children have been put in the order that Thomas named them in his will, which seems to be in age order, with John the son who died before the will was made assumed to be their eldest child. This also means that it’s been assumed that their son Nicholas was actually the one recorded as William at the Maresfield baptism of 1587 as there is no William in the will which names Nicholas as the youngest son and no burial of a William has been found or other baptism for a Nicholas.

Ursula died twenty-one years after the birth of her youngest child and she was buried in St Bartholomew’s Churchyard at Maresfield on 5 September 1613; she was probably in her mid to late 50s. Just over a year later Thomas died and was buried in St Bartholomew’s Churchyard at Maresfield on 26 October 1614; he was probably in his late 50s. Thomas’ will dated 14 September 1614, which described him as a yeoman of Maresfield, was proved at the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 25 September 1615.[1] Thomas left legacies of ten shillings each to five of his children, Thomas (eldest son), Anne Trendle (eldest daughter), Arthur, Eleanor Peckden, and Nicholas (youngest son). Eleanor and Nicholas also received a flockbed each. Thomas also left five shillings each to his grandson Thomas son of Arthur and Ursula Peckden his wife’s goddaughter. Ursula (youngest daughter) was made sole executrix and received the residue of Thomas’ estate.

Thomas and Ursula’s eldest child was John Muddle who was born in about 1580. John died at Maresfield and was buried in St Bartholomew’s Churchyard at Maresfield on 29 April 1607, at the age of about 27. John died intestate and administration of his estate was granted to his brother Arthur by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 16 September 1609, and the inventory exhibited valued his effects at 43s 4d.[2]

Thomas and Ursula’s second child was Thomas Muddle who was born in about 1582. When he was about 25 years old Thomas married Mary King at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 18 October 1607. Thomas and Mary had at least one child, a son. When his father died in 1614 Thomas received a bequest of ten shillings. Thomas died at Balcombe in Sussex when he was about 52 years old, and he was buried in St Mary's Churchyard at Balcombe on 31 July 1634. Thomas died intestate and administration of his estate was granted to his widow Mary by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 11 December 1634, and the inventory exhibited valued his effects at £31 10s 5d.[3]

Thomas and Mary’s only known child was Henry Muddle who died at Balcombe in Sussex and was buried in St Mary’s Churchyard at Balcombe on 7 November 1634. Henry was described as the son of Thomas on his burial record.

Thomas and Ursula’s third child was Anne Muddle who was born in about 1583. When she was about 21 years old Anne married Richard Trendell at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 18 June 1604. When her father died in 1614 Anne received a bequest of ten shillings.

Thomas and Ursula’s forth child was Arthur Muddle who was born in about 1584. Arthur was described as a clothier of Maresfield when he was granted administration of his brother John's estate by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 16 September 1609. When he was about 26 years old Arthur married Agnice Steven at St Mary the Virgin Church in Hartfield on 15 June 1610. They initially lived at Maresfield where their first child was born in 1611. They then moved to Fletching where their other three children were born between 1614 and 1618. Their second child died in 1617 when only three years old. When his father died in 1614 Arthur received a bequest of ten shillings. Arthur died only three years after the birth of their youngest child, and he was buried in St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Churchyard at Fletching on 13 June 1621, at the age of about 37. Two years later Agnice (now called Anne) married Thomas Treape at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 22 June 1623.

Arthur and Agnice’s eldest child was Thomas Muddle who was baptised at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 6 October 1611. When his grandfather died in 1614 Thomas received a bequest of five shillings.

Arthur and Agnice’s second child was Anne Muddle who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 9 January 1614. Anne died at Fletching when only three years old, and she was buried in St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Churchyard at Fletching on 4 May 1617.

Arthur and Agnice’s third child was Temperance Muddle who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 29 October 1615. When she was 31 years old Temperance married 29-year-old Richard Gringo at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 26 January 1647. Richard was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Gringo, he had been born at Lindfield in Sussex and baptised at All Saints' Church in Lindfield on 15 February 1618. He, it's thought, then moved with his parents to Newick in Sussex where both his parents died; his mother in 1637 and his father in 1663.

Richard and Temperance lived at Fletching where they had two children born in 1650 and 1654. Then 10 years after the birth of their second child Temperance died at the age of 49, and was buried in the Churchyard of St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin at Fletching on 24 January 1665. Richard, at the age of 48, then married Elizabeth Parker at St Mary's Church in Newick on 25 October 1666; they were both then living at Fletching. They didn't have any children, and five years after their marriage Richard died, at the age of 53, and was buried in the Churchyard of St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin at Fletching on 20 June 1671. Elizabeth then married John Farncombe at St Mary's Church in Newick on 16 April 1673 by licence. The licence issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes on 15 April 1673 described them both as being from Fletching, and Elizabeth to be a widow.

Richard and Temperance’s eldest child was William Gringo who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 17 February 1650. When he was 29 years old William married Sarah Bennett at St Bartholomew's Church in Maresfield, Sussex on 6 February 1679.

Richard and Temperance’s second child was Richard Gringo who was born on 24 October 1654 and baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 29 October 1654.

Arthur and Agnice’s fourth child was William Muddle who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 12 September 1618. When he was about 28 years old William married Timothie Feild at St Nicholas’ Church in Worth on 8 September 1646. They lived at Fletching where they had three children born between 1647 and 1656.

William is thought to be the William Mudell, glover of Fletching, mentioned in the Sussex Quarter Session records of October 1649, when clothworker John Hoad of Isfield was accused of stealing on 20 June 1649 at Isfield nine yards of woollen cloth valued at 20s from William Reynolds. John Hoad said in his defence that this cloth was his own that he had made from wool supplied partly by his brother Thomas Hoad of Hellingly and partly by William Mudell glover of Fletching. John Hoad was acquitted of the charge.[4]

Timothie died at Fletching and she was buried in St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Churchyard at Fletching on 2 September 1680; her burial record states that it was confirmed that she was buried in woollen by the oath of Edmund Muddle of Ardingly given on 13 September 1680. This Edmund would have been her eldest son, who was living at Ardingly. Then the following month William died at Fletching at the age of 62, and he was buried in St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Churchyard at Fletching on 5 October 1680; his burial record states that it was confirmed that he was buried in woollen by the oath of John Kid of Fletching given on 7 October 1680.

William and Timothie’s eldest child was Edmund Muddle who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 25 August 1647. When he was 34 years old Edmund married 25-year-old Diana Gibson at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 15 September 1681. Diana was the daughter of Edward and Anne Gibson, and she had been baptised at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 10 April 1656.

Edmund and Diana lived at Ardingly where they had five children born between 1682 and 1692. Two years after the birth of their last child Diana died at Ardingly, at the age of 38, and she was buried in St Peter’s Churchyard at Ardingly on 25 September 1694. Twenty years later Edmund died at Ardingly, at the age of 67, and he was buried with his wife in St Peter’s Churchyard at Ardingly on 31 May 1715 . Their grave is marked by an inscribed headstone.

Edmund and Diana’s eldest child was William Muddle who was baptised at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 29 September 1682. When he was 23 years old William married Mary Juppe, who was about 33, at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 28 March 1706. See the section headed ‘William & Mary Muddle’s Family’ for the rest of their lives and details of their family.

Edmund and Diana’s second child was Edmund Muddle who was baptised at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 15 February 1684. Edmund, at the age of 30, would have been a master cooper with his own cooperage business at Lindfield, when by an indenture dated 24 November 1714 he was paid £12 by John Coulstock, yeoman of Hurstpierpoint, to take his son Thomas Coulstock as an apprentice cooper for a term of 6 years from the date of the indenture, and out of this Edmund paid 6s in stamp duty on 18 January 1715.[5] When he was 32 years old Edmund married Sarah Tabb at All Saints’ Church in Lindfield on 3 May 1716, by a licence issued at Lewes Archdeaconry Court on 2 May 1716. The licence described Sarah as being a maiden of Lindfield. See the section headed ‘Edmund & Sarah Muddle’s Family’ for the rest of their lives and details of their family.

Edmund and Diana’s third child was Timothy Muddle who was baptised at St Peter’s Church in Ardingly on 21 June 1687. When she was 28 years old Timothy married John Crossingham at St Katherine by the Tower Church in London on 19 July 1715. They had one child at Kingston-upon-Thames in mid-1716, before John died and was buried in the Churchyard of St Paul in Hammersmith, Middlesex on 4 November 1716. Five years later widow Timothy, at the age of 34, married Nicholas Dotheridge at St Katherine by the Tower Church in London on 14 September 1721 by licence.

John and Timothy’s only known child was Anne Crossingham who was baptised at the Independent Chapel, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey on 3 May 1716.

Edmund and Diana’s fourth child was Susanna Muddle who was born at Ardingly in Sussex and baptised at the Parish Church of St Peter in Ardingly on 19 February 1690. Susanna never married. She died at Ardingly, at the age of 25, and was buried in the Churchyard of St Peter at Ardingly on 9 May 1715. Her grave is marked by an inscribed headstone.

Edmund and Diana’s fifth child was Hannah Muddle who was born at Ardingly in Sussex and baptised at the Parish Church of St Peter in Ardingly on 27 May 1692. Hannah never married. She died at Croydon in Surrey, at the age of 22, and was buried in the Churchyard of St John the Baptist at Croydon on 30 July 1714.

William and Timothie’s second child was Timothie Muddle who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 6 April 1651.

William and Timothie’s third child was William Muddle who was born on 24 March 1656 and baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 6 April 1656. William probably never married. He was living at Lindfield when he died at the age of 83 (not 82 as given on his burial record), and he was buried in St Peter’s Churchyard at Ardingly on 28 August 1739.

Thomas and Ursula’s fifth child was Eleanor Muddle, also known as Ellen, who was baptised at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 17 April 1586. When she was 25 years old Eleanor married Richard Packden at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching on 20 May 1611. When her father died in 1614 Eleanor received a bequest of ten shillings and a flockbed.

Thomas and Ursula’s sixth child was Nicholas Muddle who was baptised at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 30 October 1587. This baptism was recorded as being of a William Muddle, but is thought to be Nicholas’ baptism for the reasons give in the section above on his parents. When his father died in 1614 Nicholas received a bequest of ten shillings and a flockbed. Nicholas married Mary sometime after his father made his will in 1614. Mary died at Worth in Sussex and was buried in St Nicholas’ Churchyard at Worth on 31 December 1642. Nicholas then married Anne. Anne died at Worth and was buried in St Nicholas’ Churchyard at Worth on 26 February 1654. Four years later Nicholas died at the age of 70, and he was buried in St Nicholas’ Churchyard at Worth on 24 March 1658.

Thomas and Ursula’s seventh child was Ursula Muddle who was baptised at St Bartholomew’s Church in Maresfield on 13 February 1592. When her father died in 1614 Ursula was his sole executrix and received the residue of his estate. Ursula was living at Nutley in Maresfield Parish when, at the age of 24, she married Henry Waller, who was from Godstone in Surrey, at Newick Church on 30 September 1616 by a licence issued by my Lord Grace of Canterbury.
