John & Barbara Muddle's Family

Chart of John & Barbara Muddle's Family

John Muddle married Barbara Kemp at Allynbrook in New South Wales on 8 June 1868. They had twelve children born between 1869 and 1892. They first lived at a number of places in Paterson registration district. Then from about 1883 to 1888 they lived in Clarence Town registration district before moving back to Paterson registration district. When his daughter Anne married in 1902 John was described as being a farmer. Barbara died in Paterson registration district on 10 August 1912, at the age of 63, and she was buried in St Mary-on-Allyn Church of England Cemetery at Allynbrook. The following year John died in Dungog registration district on 12 March 1913, at the age of 67, and he was buried with his wife in St Mary-on-Allyn Church of England Cemetery at Allynbrook.

Probate of John's will, which had been made on 20 August 1912 while he was living at Allynbrook, valued his estate and effects at under Ł377. This will left his estate to be equally divided between his eleven surviving children, and made his son William John Muddle and his son-in-law Norman Rumbel executors. It is assumed that the Norman Rumbel made an executor was actually Edward Norman Rumbel who had married Clara May Muddle, the illegitimate daughter of John's daughter Anne, who had probably been raised by John and his wife as their own daughter. This will showed that John was unable to write as he just made his mark when signing.[1]

Their children were:

Anne 1869-1944  Effie Eliza 1870-1899  Edwin 1872-1946

Amelia Mary 1874-1931  Jane 1875-?  William John 1878-1945

Isaac James 1880-1957  Samuel 1883-1959  Alice 1886-1959

Sarah Maud 1888-1939  Ada 1890-1943  Julia Susan B 1892-1964

John and Barbara’s eldest child was Anne Muddle who was born in Paterson registration district in New South Wales on 22 March 1869. In 1887 when she was about 18 years old Anne had an illegitimate son born in Clarence Town registration district, and then in 1890 she had an illegitimate daughter, followed by another illegitimate daughter in 1899, both of whom were born in Paterson registration district. Then in 1900 Anne had another illegitimate daughter born in West Maitland registration district and fathered by Thomas Buxton.

When she was 33 years old Anne married 46-year-old widower David Forrest at the Congregational Church, Carrington Street, West Maitland, New South Wales on 23 May 1902. David was a stonemason who had been born at Brechin in Scotland. David and Anne had one child born in West Maitland registration district in 1902 before it seems they probably separated. Then in 1905 Anne had another illegitimate son born in West Maitland registration district and fathered by William Ernest Dever. Then in 1912 Anne, who was now about 43, had yet another illegitimate son born in Stroud registration district, whose father is unknown. Though a clue to who this father may have been is that Anne was referred to as Anne Donaldson by her father when he made his will on 20 August 1912. Anne died under the name Forrest in Wallsend registration district near Newcastle in New South Wales, at the age of 75, and was buried in Sandgate Cemetery near Newcastle on 12 December 1944.

Arthur died intestate and without anybody knowing anything of his family so administration of his estate, valued at under Ł84, was granted to Public Trustee Thomas William Garrett of Sydney by the Supreme Court of New South Wales Probate Jurisdiction on 18 April 1922.[2]

Anne’s second illegitimate child was Clara May Muddle whose birth was registered in Paterson registration district in New South Wales during 1890.
