Arthur & Bridget Muddle's Family

Chart of Arthur & Bridget Muddle's Family

Arthur Muddle married Bridget Southerden at the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene in Stockbury, Kent on 30 July 1605. Arthur and Bridget lived at Hollingbourne in Kent where they had eleven children born between 1606 and about 1628. The second of these children, daughter Joan, must have died in infancy as her name was also used for their third child.

Arthur’s mother died in 1608 and in her will she left Arthur a brass furnace, iron pot and sieve for corn which are in the possession of his brother John, and £5 that John owes his mother in rent, and also her featherbed, one featherboulster, two featherpillows, three pair of sheets, one pair of pillowcoats, three blankets, one coverlet, and one flockboulster. On his mother’s death Arthur would also have come into possession of the property called Highfield that his father had bequeathed him. Arthur’s brother Henry died in 1614 and in his will he bequeathed ten shillings that, after the death of his wife Dorothy, was to be equally divided between Arthur’s children. When Arthur’s brother John died in 1637 Arthur was one of the executors of John’s will and was bequeathed 20 shillings by John. This will also left 2s 6d to Arthur’s eldest daughter Elizabeth and 12d to each of Arthur’s other children.

Arthur died at Hollingbourne at the age of 57 and he was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 17 March 1638. Bridget was living at Iron Street in Hollingbourne when she died and was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 24 January 1653.

Their children were:

Elizabeth 1606-?  Joan 1607-?  Joan 1609-?  Samuel 1611-?

William 1612-1663  Mildred 1614-?  Bridget 1618-?  Henry 1620-1634

Nicholas 1622-?  Judith 1626-?  James 1628-1648

Arthur and Bridget’s eldest child was Elizabeth Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 11 May 1606. When her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Muddle, died in 1608 she left Elizabeth £3 and also two pewter platters, two pewter dishes, one chaffing dish, one latten candlestick, one pewter pot, three brass kettles, and one brass saucepan that were to be held for her by her father until she was 18 years old. When she was 23 years old Elizabeth married Elias Wingmoor at the Church of St Peter & St Paul in Charing, Kent on 8 April 1630. Elizabeth was still alive in 1637 when her father’s brother John bequeathed her 2s 6d in his will.

Arthur and Bridget’s second child was Joan Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 20 October 1607. Joan probably died soon after birth and was certainly dead when her parents used the name Joan again for their third child in 1609.

Arthur and Bridget’s third child was Joan Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 7 May 1609. When she was 29 years old Joan married John Acton at the Church of St Nicholas in Leeds, Kent on 25 June 1638. Joan's name was spelt Johanna in the marriage register.

Arthur and Bridget’s fourth child was Samuel Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 13 January 1611. On 16 September 1652 in Hollingbourne Samuel was one of the witnesses of the will of his cousin Richard Muddle, the son of his father’s brother William.

Arthur and Bridget’s fifth child was William Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 4 October 1612. When he was 23 years old William married 25-year-old Jane Bayden at the Church of St Nicholas in Leeds, Kent on 12 July 1636. The marriage register stated that William was from Hollingbourne and Jane from Leeds. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Bayden and she had been baptised at the Church of St Nicholas in Leeds on 9 June 1611. William and Jane had five children born at Hollingbourne between 1640 and 1651, two of whom died in infancy in 1644 and 1651.

It seems that William Muddle of Hollingbourne had been indicted for some offence and at the Maidstone Assizes held on 17 March 1657 a writ was issued for the sheriff to summon him to come to court to answer this indictment. At the next assize held on 7 July 1657 the sheriff had not been able to issue the summons so a writ was issued for the sheriff to arrest William, but this does not seem to have happened because at the next assize held on 30 March 1658 a writ was again issued for the sheriff to arrest William. Again William does not seem to have been arrested because at the next assize held on 21 July 1658 a writ was issued for the sheriff to summon William to court, but yet again this does not seem to have happened as a year later at the assize held on 26 July 1659 the sheriff returned the writ.[1]

William died at Hollingbourne, at the age of 50, and he was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 30 January 1663. Fourteen years later Jane died at Hollingbourne, at the age of 66, and she was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 8 September 1677.

William and Jane’s eldest child was Elizabeth Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 7 June 1640.

William and Jane’s second child was an unnamed child who was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne in Kent on 3 April 1644. This child had probably died soon after birth and had not been baptised, it was described as ‘William Muddle’s child’ at burial.

William and Jane’s third child was Ellen Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 29 January 1646.

William and Jane’s fourth child was Margaret Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 30 March 1648. When she was 20 years old Margaret married Caleb Smith at the Church of St Peter & St Paul in Ospringe, Kent on 5 October 1668.

William and Jane’s fifth child was an unnamed daughter who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent on 31 May 1651. She died soon after birth and was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 1 June 1651.

Arthur and Bridget’s sixth child was Mildred Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 4 September 1614.

Arthur and Bridget’s seventh child was Bridget Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 15 March 1618. When she was 23 years old Bridget married William Browne at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 24 August 1641. They had three children born at Hollingbourne in 1642 and 1651, the last two being twins who only lived a few days.

William and Bridget’s eldest child was Elizabeth Browne who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 24 August 1642.

William and Bridget’s next two children were unnamed twins who were born at Hollingbourne in Kent on 20 February 1651. One twin was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 23 February 1651 and the other on 28 February 1651.

Arthur and Bridget’s eighth child was Henry Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 1 January 1620. Henry died at Hollingbourne when he was 14 years old, and he was buried in the Churchyard of All Saints at Hollingbourne on 10 April 1634.

Arthur and Bridget’s ninth child was Nicholas Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 21 July 1622. When his brother James died in 1649 Nicholas inherited his brother’s new boots. In the Kent Hearth Tax of 1664 Nicholas Muddle was recorded in the Parish of Hollingbourne in the Hundred of Eyhorne as having one hearth that was not chargeable.[2] Nicholas married Thomasin and they had two children born at Hollingbourne in 1664 and 1668.

Nicholas and Thomasin’s eldest child was William Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 11 September 1664. When he was 22 years old William married Elizabeth Munn at the Church of All Saints in Loose, Kent on 23 September 1686. See the section headed ‘William & Elizabeth Muddle’s Family’ for the rest of their lives and details of their family.

Nicholas and Thomasin’s second child was Katherine Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne during September 1668.

Arthur and Bridget’s tenth child was Judith Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and baptised at the Church of All Saints in Hollingbourne on 19 March 1626.

Arthur and Bridget’s eleventh child was James Muddle who was born at Hollingbourne in Kent and whose baptism has not been found. James married Joan Lucke and they had one child born at Thurnham, which is 3 miles north-west of Hollingbourne, in early 1648. Then about 6 months later James died and was buried in the Churchyard of St Mary the Virgin at Thurnham on 4 October 1648. His burial record described him as being a householder.

James’ will, which he delivered by word of mouth at the time of his last sickness, not long before he died, described him as being a blacksmith of Thurnham, and was proved by the Archdeaconry of Canterbury on 22 September 1649.. This will made the following bequests: To his mother Bridget Muddle, widow of Hollingbourne, twenty shillings. To his daughter Jane Muddle £50 to be at her mother’s disposing so long as she doesn’t remarry. To his brother Nicholas Muddle his new boots. To his wife’s sister Jane Lucke twenty shillings. To his wife’s nephew Robert Bewly five shillings. To his servant John Charlton five shillings. To Steven Lucke, Samuel Hariss and Mary Mayham, who were all with him the night before he died, twelve shillings each. To his wife, who was executrix of the will, all the rest of his goods including his interest in the goods of his wife’s late father Gyles Lucke then being administered by his wife and her mother Joane Lucke.

James and Joan’s only child was Jane Muddle who was born at Thurnham in Kent and baptised at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Thurnham on 3 April 1648.
