Richard Longly lived at Rotherfield in Sussex where he had fourteen children born between 1572 and 1599. Richard was one of the three supervisors of the will of blacksmith William Alchorne of Rotherfield who died in 1580.[1] Richard died at Rotherfield and he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 25 February 1629.

 

 

Richard’s eldest child was John Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 1 June 1572.

 

Richard’s second child was Arthur Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 25 September 1575.

 

Richard’s third child was Elizabeth Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 16 March 1578.

 

Richard’s fourth child was John Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 2 June 1580.

 

Richard’s fifth child was Christopher Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 7 October 1582.

 

Richard’s sixth child was Grace Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 17 October 1585.

 

Richard’s seventh child was Richard Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 16 October 1586. Richard died when he was only a few days old, and he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on the 30 October 1586.

 

Richard’s eighth child was Elizabeth Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 24 December 1587.

 

Richard’s ninth child was Agnes Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 29 September 1588.

 

Richard’s tenth child was Mary Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 29 March 1590. When she was 18 years old Mary married 22-year-old John Hider at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching, Sussex on the 30 May 1608 by a licence issued at Lewes Archdeaconry Court on 28 May 1608. The licence described John as being a husbandman of Rotherfield, and Mary as a maiden of Rotherfield. John was the son of Christopher Hider, and he had been baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 8 May 1586.

John and Mary first lived at Fletching where their two children were born, a son in 1609 and a daughter in 1611. They then moved to Rotherfield were their daughter died in April 1612 and John died the following month at the age of 26; he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 26 May 1612.

Three years after John’s death Mary, at the age of 25, married 25-year-old Thomas Muddle. No record of the actual marriage has been found, but a licence was issued at Lewes Archdeaconry Court on 2 October 1615, which stated that the marriage was to take place at Rotherfield Church. The licence described Thomas as being a blacksmith of Rotherfield, and Mary as being a widow of Rotherfield. Thomas was the son of John and Margary Muddle; he had been born at Rotherfield and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 25 January 1590. John and Mary’s eldest child was Richard Hider who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching, Sussex on 22 October 1609.

 

John and Mary’s second child was Mary Hider who was baptised at St Andrew & St Mary the Virgin Church in Fletching, Sussex on 7 April 1611. Mary died when only a year old, and she was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on the 26 April 1612.

 

 

Richard’s eleventh child was John Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 13 December 1590.

 

Richard’s twelfth child was Richard Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 22 April 1593.

 

Richard’s thirteenth child was Elizabeth Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 1 January 1596.

 

Richard’s fourteenth child was Nicholas Longly who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 18 November 1599.
