Chart of the Vincent Family

William Vincent lived at Rotherfield in Sussex where he had twelve children born between 1628 and 1652. William died at Rotherfield and was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 26 August 1654.

William’s eldest child was Simon Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 1 June 1628. Simon died at the age of 17, and he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 30 October 1645.

William’s second child was Anne Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 24 February 1630.

William’s third child was Steven Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 20 May 1632.

William’s fourth child was William Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 2 November 1634. William died at the age of 4, and he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 16 May 1639.

William’s fifth child was Mary Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 12 February 1637. Mary married John Parsons. Two bonds dated 1 May 1676, with a penalty of £300 (equivalent to about £35,500 in 2006), for the performance of covenants detailed in a pair of indentures of the same date, named John and Mary as one of the parties, and described John as a yeoman of Newdigate in Surrey.[1]

William’s sixth child was Robert Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 1 March 1640.

William’s seventh child was William Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 24 September 1643. William died at the age of 2, and he was buried in St Denys Churchyard at Rotherfield on 30 January 1646.

William’s eighth child was Margaret Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 18 December 1645. When she was 23 years old Margaret married Edmund Homesby at St Mary’s Church in Ticehurst, Sussex on 20 April 1669. Two bonds dated 1 May 1676, with a penalty of £300 (equivalent to about £35,500 in 2006), for the performance of covenants detailed in a pair of indentures of the same date, named Edmund and Margaret as one of the parties, and described Edmund as a linen weaver of Rotherfield.

William’s ninth child, one of twins, was Elizabeth Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 16 April 1648. No burial has been found for Elizabeth, but as another daughter was named Elizabeth in 1652, and it was fairly common at this time for at least one, if not both, of twins to die very young, it’s assumed that Elizabeth must have died by 1652.

William’s tenth child, one of twin, was Susan Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 16 April 1648. Two bonds dated 1 May 1676, with a penalty of £300 (equivalent to about £35,500 in 2006), for the performance of covenants detailed in a pair of indentures of the same date, named Susan as one of the parties, and described her as a spinster of Penshurst in Kent. The bonds show that Susan was literate and could sign her name with quite a neat hand.

William’s eleventh child was Sara Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 15 September 1650.

William’s twelfth child was Elizabeth Vincent who was born at Rotherfield in Sussex, and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 2 November 1652. When she was 23 years old Elizabeth married 32-year-old John Muddle at St Peter & St Paul Church in Wadhurst, Sussex on 20 April 1676. John was the son of John and Sarah Muddle; he had been born at Rotherfield and baptised at St Denys Church in Rotherfield on 30 July 1643. See John Muddle in the 'Buxted Muddles' for of the rest of John and Elizabeth's lives and details their family.
