William & Elizabeth Muddell's Family

Chart of William & Elizabeth Muddell's Family

William Muddle married Elizabeth Creighton at St Paul's Anglican Church in Kincumber, which is about 30 miles north of Sydney in New South Wales, on 21 July 1852. William and Elizabeth had seven children born in Gosford registration district in New South Wales between 1854 and 1864; one was stillborn. They were living at Wyoming when their first child was baptised in 1854 and then at Mosquito Town when their second child was baptised in 1855. William worked as a sawyer and then later as a farm labourer. He was killed on 2 December 1863 while working as a farm labourer at Maidens Brush Creek (now North Gosford) at the age of 35. An entry in Rev Alfred Glennie's journal for 8 December 1863 records:[1]

I received a letter from Mr Coulter - Gosford - conveying the sad news of the sudden & untimely end of poor William Muddle. His death was caused by his running against the limb of a tree, which must have ruptured some of his intestines.

Frank Jaques, grandson of William's daughter Amelia, records that William was impaled on a stick in an accident while chasing cattle at Maidens Bush Creek. William was buried in Point Frederick Cemetery at Gosford on 3 December 1863.

William's death left Elizabeth with five young children aged between one and nine years and expecting a sixth. About two years after William's death the Rev Alfred Glennie tried to help by seeing if William's sister Elizabeth, who had married Henry Brooker in 1865, would render any assistance to her brother's widow by taking one or two of the children. In his journal he records that he visited the Brookers at Paterson on 6 October 1865, but did no good thereby.

Between 1875 and 1879 the family changed its name to Muddell. Elizabeth was a midwife and lived at 'Willow Glen' at the eastern end of Donnison Street in Gosford. She died on 22 February 1907 at her home, Willow Glen in Gosford, at the age of 78, after a protracted illness, and she was buried in Point Frederick Cemetery at Gosford on 24 February 1907.[2]

Their children were:

Amelia Margaret 1854-1944  Eliza Ann 1855-1940  UNNAMED 1857-1857

Robert 1858-1917  Harriet Mary 1860-1931  Margaret Lucinda 1862-1941

Wilhelmina Elizabeth 1864-1940

William and Elizabeth’s eldest child was Amelia Margaret Muddle/Muddell who was born at Wyoming, Gosford, New South Wales on 20 April 1854, and baptised in Gosford Parish on 2 July 1854. When she was nearly 25 years old Amelia married 23-year-old George Henry Jaques at Holy Trinity Church, also known as the Garrison Church, in Sydney on 16 April 1879. George had been born at Broughton Creek, Shoalhaven, New South Wales on 2 April 1856, the son of Henry and Sophia Jaques, and the brother of Alfred Snaith Jaques who married Amelia’s sister Eliza. George constructed roads and buildings in the Ourimbah area such as the Ourimbah Creek Road and St Peter’s Church in Ourimbah, and on his own property he built a school for his own children and the children of his employees. The family lived at ‘Palm Grove’ until it was sold in 1920, when they retired to ‘Palm View’, which was about 2 miles east of Palm Grove. The word ‘palm’ in both these names refers to the Cabbage Tree Palm that was common in the area at that time.
